Is Indian food spicy? Concluding an age-old debate.

Indian food

Does that question pop in your mind, too? If yes, you’re at the right place. The term ‘spicy’ usually refers to all kinds of ground spices that are used for different purposes. Some of them are used to stir aroma and flavors while some are added for health or for heat. India, being the world's epicenter of spices, uses all of these types in its cuisine. So, the answer is yes.

But being spicy doesn't always mean ‘burning hot’ because, as we said above, not all spices are hot and are used to increase the burning hot flavor. The gourmet Indian fast food is known to have a strong, spicy and (often) chili flavor but it is also true that not all Indian food is spicy.

Let’s dig a little deeper.

Indian food is a combination of various flavors like sweet, sour, spicy and aromatic. The dishes you are served when you order takeout food near Oakland airport are made up of these flavors and you have the freedom to choose the milder dishes that include Spinach Tofu, Lentil stew, mixed vegetables, shahi paneer and more. All these recipes are cooked with fragrant spices like cinnamon, cardamon, Black cardamom to add the zest.

But if you’re a spice lover, you’re never short on options. The dishes like Vindaloo, Chana Masala, Lamb Curry, Biryanis and more. Indian cuisine lends so many more flavors than just hot spicy.

There are dishes that need green chili or ground red chili to enhance the flavors while others only need the Kashmiri Red chili that offers a fetching fierce color to the delicacies. So, these spices balance out the other spices and make Indian food what it is known for.

Tips to deal with the heat of Indian food

The best part about the cuisine is that it maintains the balance between the flavors. If you’re having a really spicy meal, you have several options to balance out the heat and keep your stomach cool. You can take a cup of fresh yogurt in your lunch and consume it in many ways like Spiced Raita, Sweet lassi, Cucumber-yogurt salad and more.

The other way is to take a glass of buttermilk and add a pinch of salt into it to enjoy it with your meals. Yogurt and butter ilk not only help you fight the heat but also strengthen your gut health if you consume them regularly.

Indian food is a must-try for everyone in a lifetime. Visit Royal Kitchen near Oakland airport and explore these divine flavors now.
