The History of Tandoor in the Indian Way of Cooking.

History of Tandoor

Tandoor is a term that is used for clay ovens in Indian cooking that are mostly in a cylindrical shape these days and are fired using coal and wood. These ovens are used to create heat that remains at a high temperature for an extended duration of time, which helps in making delicious dishes like Naan, tandoori chicken, and kebabs, etc. Several gourmet Indian fast-food dishes derive their name from this like Tandoori Chicken, Tandoori Roti, and more, and are being popular across the globe. The reason why people are in love with these Tandoori dishes is the unique taste, smokiness, and char that comes from tandoor cooking.

History

The presence of Tandoor can also be found in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and several Central Asian countries, other than the Indian subcontinent. The countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Persia, and had earthen tandoors in use. The tandoors were brought to India when Mughals entered the country, and the royal cooks introduced cylindrical-shaped tandoor so they could take them wherever they traveled. But they were produced in India much earlier as many North Indian states have a history of using them to cook a variety of tandoori delicacies that you can find in our menu. These tandoors are, now, replaced by portable tandoors and even modern metal tandoors.

Here are some of the Tandoori dishes that we serve at Royal Kitchen
